Measurement Tips

Bring arms to your sides, place tape measure under your arms
and run it around the fullest part of the bustline.

Locate the natural crease of your waist by bending to one side. Loop the tape measure around
your natural waistline, keeping one finger between the tape and your body for an easy fit.

Place feet together, loop the tape measure around the fullest part of your hips,
approximately 7 inches below your waistline.

The Checklist

New Motherhood

I became a mother when my daughter was born last summer.  For me, motherhood is a daily practice that requires more grit, empathy, authenticity, and strength than I had access to before.  As I approach month eight on this journey, these are my tried pieces and resources I most recommend to new mothers and mothers-to-be.  As I was reviewing my complete list of recommendations for this story, something they each share became obvious: every item on this list was created by a mother herself.

Rally On,

Organic Cotton Burp Cloths

Our most used baby item since day one. Green Sprouts is a mother-daughter owned company with over 60% women in senior management roles. They have been advocating for non-toxic materials for babies since 1982 when it was almost impossible to find them. Our apartment and diaper bag are filled with their burp cloths and bibs!

Fragrance Free Essentials

When our pediatrician recommended fragrance free skincare we tested a lot of different brands in this category. Babo won. Everything is plant derived and free of sulfates, parabens, and phthalates. We use everything in the newborn set (diaper cream, shampoo & wash, daily lotion) plus the healing ointment. The little bunny on all the packaging doesn't hurt either!

Rose Hip Swaddle

We have swaddles from different brands but this one from Lewis became our favorite (available in blush). The prints are beautiful and held up best compared to others that faded in the wash. They are screen printed and made from 100% GOTS-certified organic muslin.

Cloud Brushed Organic Flannel Crib Sheet

The name of this crib sheet is appropriate as it's truly the softness and most cozy. We have the undyed version, which has a more natural aesthetic as opposed to traditional white. Choosing organic means that chemicals are left out of the planet's soil, the bodies of the women and men who work to bring these products to market and our baby's crib.

The Rabbit Listened

This book is about processing difficult emotions. Don't we all need help with that? It's beautifully done and gives me early insight into how I might talk to my daughter about the hard things.

Little Lamb Play Mat

This play mat has enough cushioning to create comfort on harder surfaces but not enough to hinder movement. She had so many firsts on this mat! It's washer and dryer friendly too. We love Pehr's prints (which is a good thing as this mat is always out in the apartment!).

Convertible Romper

Snaps and zippers are not your friend at 3 a.m. so you'll want a few of these gown style onesies. Bonus: this version allows you to convert back to a regular onesie during the day. Double bonus: Under the Nile has a "Gender Equality Strategist" on staff. Also, the stork print.

Pointelle Kimono Bodysuit

These pointelle pieces were my favorite in the earliest months. The kimono style is helpful at the beginning when you don't want to force things over your baby's head. This is another favorite kimono piece.

Your arms will need a rest. This lounger lived on our living room couch for three months straight.

Balloon Onesie

You will undoubtedly splurge on something for your baby just because it's adorable. For me, it was balloon onesies from Makié.

Wood and Silicone Pacifier Clip

The only reason her toys aren't always on the floor. Plus, non-toxic.

The Play Kits

This company gave me direction and confidence very early on. The research and thoughtfulness behind each product is obvious.

Organic Cotton Heirloom Baby Blanket

Always on our baby when we're out (especially helpful to add a layer of warmth in the car seat as you're not supposed to bulk up under the harness.) Much thicker than a swaddle but still washer/dryer friendly. Beautiful and sustainably made. A great piece for your registry or to gift another mama too. Also available in grey.

Wellington Baby Bag

I use this crossbody when I need to be hands free (every airport situation). Outside pockets allow us to grab what we need without having to unzip. Inside pockets are great too.

Unruffled Podcast
Free Resource

There is an avalanche of parenting books and podcasts out there (not to mention unsolicited advice from strangers walking down the street). It was a relief when I discovered Janet Lansbury. Her approach feels most aligned with my natural instincts.

Black Lisa Top

I like to do a nursing tank top under a button down when I know I'll be breastfeeding in public. I can wear buttoned or unbuttoned depending on weather or where I'm going. I lived in this button down before having a baby and I love that it's stayed with me in this phase.

All Purpose Wipes

Every family will decide how much disinfectant to use in their home. For a non-toxic clean, we use Dapple. We use these on the changing table, high chair and overall surfaces of her room. We use this to treat stains on clothes and keep these in our diaper bag.

The Chair

This is the smallest high chair I could find (hi NYC people!) that I also liked to look at. The tray goes into the dishwasher and I love that the legs are made from sustainably sourced beech wood. When our baby is older it will convert to a toddler seat, which means we'll use for years to come.

First Foods Set

We entered the world of solid foods when our baby turned 6 months old. This set allowed her to feed herself and drink from a cup from the start. Their website was also a great overall resource to get a handle on how to do solids.

Price Varies

While I'd love to be a mom that makes every meal for her baby, that isn't my reality. Little Spoon was the healthiest alternative I could find (organic, preservative free.) It also provides variety. We do a mix of these and homemade meals - about one of each a day for now.
