Measurement Tips

Bring arms to your sides, place tape measure under your arms
and run it around the fullest part of the bustline.

Locate the natural crease of your waist by bending to one side. Loop the tape measure around
your natural waistline, keeping one finger between the tape and your body for an easy fit.

Place feet together, loop the tape measure around the fullest part of your hips,
approximately 7 inches below your waistline.

New Motherhood

I became a mother when my daughter was born last summer.  For me, motherhood is a daily practice that compares to no other.  Motherhood has required more grit, empathy, authenticity, and power than I've ever needed before.  As I approach the end of my first year on this journey, I want to share the things that have brought me the most comfort, ease and beauty along the way.  These are my tried pieces and resources I most recommend to new mothers and mothers-to-be.  As I was reviewing my complete list of recommendations for this story, something they each share became obvious: every item on this list was created by a mother herself.

Rally On,
Cloud Brushed Organic Flannel Crib Sheet

The name of this crib sheet is appropriate as it is truly the softest, and most cozy. It has become even softer since using and washing it on a regular basis. We went for the undyed version, which has a beautiful natural aesthetic as opposed to a starker, traditional white. Choosing organic here means that toxic chemicals have been left out of our planet's soil, the bodies of the men and women who work to bring these products to market and our baby's crib.

The Rabbit Listened

This story brings us on a journey of processing difficult emotions. It is so beautifully done. We have certain books that reappear regularly in the bedtime lineup and this is definitely one of them.

Little Lamb Play Mat

This play mat is cushioned enough to create comfort but not enough to hinder baby's ability to move. Our baby had so many firsts on this mat. About once a week, it goes easily into the washer and dryer. Pehr's play mat prints are so sweet and make me happy whenever I see them (which is all the time as play mats are always out in our house!)

100% Organic Cotton Muslin Burp Cloths

Green Sprouts is a mother-daughter owned company with over 60% of senior level management positions filled by women. Green Sprouts has been advocating for non-toxic materials for babies since 1982 (when it was almost impossible to find them!) Their burp cloths and bibs were an essential since day one. Possibly our most used baby item!

Hooded Dot Onesie

I splurged on a few special clothing pieces including knitwear from fellow Brooklyn based brand, Oeuf. They are still some of my favorite pieces to put her in. Oeuf is a pioneer in fair trade and sustainable production. Plus, they have a great sample sale if you are in the New York area!

This lounger lived on our living room sofa for the first months. It gave us a safe and cozy place to put our baby whenever our arms needed a rest. It was one of her favorite places to be.

Newborn Fragrance Free Essentials

After our pediatrician recommended going fragrance free, we switched everything out for this line, which is plant derived and free of sulfates, parabens, phthalates. After trying three other brands, this is the only one that helped our baby's eczema and dry skin. We use the baby wash, daily lotion and diaper cream. Plus, I'm planning to order the conditioner soon now that our baby's curls are getting longer!

Unruffled Podcast
Free Resource

There is an avalanche of parenting books and podcasts out there (not to mention unsolicited advice from family and friends). It was a relief to discover Janet Lansbury, whose approach felt most aligned with my own natural instincts as a mother. Her podcast is a great resource for specific topics and questions.

The Play Kits

Lovevery products and corresponding play guides gave me a lot of confidence to support my baby in each stage of her development. The research and thoughtfulness that goes into these toys came through in a big way for me.

Baby Blanket

As a general rule, you aren't supposed to have bulky clothing under the car seat harness. When its cold out, we use a blanket on top of the harness to keep our baby warm. This one is thicker and cozier than a muslin swaddle but we're still able to throw it in the washer and dryer when we get home. Of course, I love that it's beautiful and sustainably made - a great piece to gift as well!

All Purpose Wipes

Every family will need to decide how much disinfectant to use in their home. For a non-toxic clean, Dapple wipes are my favorite option. We use these all purpose wipes on our changing table, high chair and around her room. We also have the travel packs for our diaper bag.

Wellington Diaper Bag

I love that I can wear this as a crossbody bag so that I can be handsfree when needed (every airport situation). There are interior and exterior pockets - everything has its place. The exterior pockets allow me to quickly grab burp cloths without having to unzip.

Wood and Silicone Pacifier Clip

This pacifier clip is the only reason our baby's toys and teethers aren't constantly on the ground. Our baby actually refused a pacifier but this clip, which is free of toxic chemicals, still proved necessary.

The Chair

This high chair takes up little room and is just pretty to look at. The tray goes right into the dishwasher and the legs are made of sustainably sourced beech wood. When our baby is older, it will convert to a toddler chair, which means we'll use it for several years longer than we would another high chair.

First Foods Set

When our baby was 6 months old, we entered the world of solid food. This set allowed our baby to feed herself and drink from a cup! Their website also gave me a much needed primer for this new stage.

While I'd love to be the mom that makes every meal for her baby, that isn't my reality. Little Spoon was the healthiest alternative I could find.
